Experience the gentle sweetness of organic Japanese black tea from Chiran in Kagoshima Prefecture.
This wakōcha (Japanese black tea) produces a beautiful copper-red liquor with a naturally smooth, rounded flavour. It is less bitter than many Western-style black teas, making it a wonderful choice for everyday drinking – from a calm morning cup to a relaxing evening tea.
What makes Kagoshima black tea special?
Kagoshima, located in the south of Japan, is one of the country’s most important tea-producing regions. The mild climate, cool nights and volcanic soil create ideal conditions for tea cultivation.
Because Japanese black tea uses cultivars typically grown for green tea, the flavour is softer, with subtle sweetness and a clean finish. It’s a great option for tea drinkers who find traditional black teas too harsh but still want a satisfying, full-flavoured cup.
How to prepare?
- Use 1 tea bag per 200–250 ml of water.
- Pour hot water at 80–90°C over the bag.
- Steep for about 3 minutes, then stir lightly and remove the tea bag.
For a bolder flavour, steep a little longer. For a milder cup, reduce the steeping time.
To keep the liquor clear and smooth, avoid over-steeping.
Storage tip: Store the tea in a cool, dry place and keep the bag tightly sealed to protect it from moisture and surrounding smells.
