What is Japanese black tea (wakoucha)?

Wakoucha literally means “Japanese black tea”.
Unlike many strong, tannic black teas from India or Sri Lanka, wakoucha is made from tea cultivars usually used for green tea. This gives the liquor a lighter body, gentle sweetness and a mellow, less astringent taste.

When combined with bergamot oil in the Earl Grey style, Japanese wakoucha becomes aromatic yet still delicate – perfect for tea drinkers who want flavour without bitterness.

How to prepare?

• Use 1 tea bag per 200–250 ml of water.
• Pour freshly boiled water cooled slightly to 80–90°C over the bag.
• Steep for about 3 minutes, then remove the tea bag and enjoy.

For a stronger cup, extend the steeping time slightly; for a lighter taste, shorten it.

To maintain the tea’s balanced flavour, avoid leaving the bag in the cup for too long.

Storage tip: Keep the tea in a tightly sealed bag, away from heat, moisture and strong odours to preserve freshness and aroma.
