Which Japanese Green Tea Is Right for You? Find Your Sencha Match
Some teas win you over with their softness. Others invite you to explore a deeper, fuller flavour. And some deserve your favourite cup and a little extra time.
If Japanese tea names feel unfamiliar, start with what you enjoy tasting. Three distinctive green teas are currently 20% off in the Rise&Zen autumn selection: Chiran, Fukamushi Kakegawa and Hatsutsumi.
All three are loose-leaf teas, ready to brew in a teapot or infuser. Here’s how to find your match.
Chiran — for a soft, fresh cup with gentle sweetness
Chiran is a welcoming place to begin exploring Japanese sencha. Its flavour is clean, fresh and gently sweet, with a mellow character when warm and deeper notes emerging as it cools.
This Kagoshima tea is blended to tea master Hirotsugu Sekiya’s recipe. Choose it for an everyday tea break you’ll look forward to returning to.
Choose Chiran if: you enjoy freshness and a soft taste.

Fukamushi Kakegawa — for a richer cup with depth
Fukamushi means “deep-steamed”. The longer steaming process breaks the leaves into finer pieces, creating a deeply green infusion with a fuller flavour.
From Japan’s Shizuoka tea region, Fukamushi Kakegawa is a natural choice if you enjoy a more expressive green tea and the savoury depth known as umami.
Choose Fukamushi if: you love a rich, flavourful cup.
100 g · €15.04 · regular price €18.80
Hatsutsumi — for a delicate, aromatic tea ritual
Hatsutsumi means “first picking”. This sencha comes from the Shizuoka and Kagoshima tea regions, bringing the gentle, aromatic character of the spring harvest to your cup.
Choose it when making tea is part of the pleasure: letting the water cool, pouring the first infusion and taking time to notice the details.
Choose Hatsutsumi if: you appreciate delicacy, aroma and subtle flavours.

A Small Brewing Detail Makes a Big Difference
Start with the brewing guidance for each tea:
- Chiran: water at 70–80°C; steep for around 40 seconds.
- Fukamushi Kakegawa: water at 70–80°C; steep for around 40 seconds.
- Hatsutsumi: water at 60–70°C; steep for 30–60 seconds.
The recommended starting quantity for all three is approximately 8 g of leaves per 240 ml of water. Pour out the finished infusion so the leaves don’t continue steeping. Brew the leaves again and discover how the flavour develops.
